The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don’t use leverage) is 100% of your money. But on the bright side, if you buy shares in a high quality company at the right price, you can gain well over 100%. For example, the World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. (NYSE:WWE) share price has soared 150% in the last half decade. Most would be very happy with that. It’s down 2.2% in the last seven days.

So let’s assess the underlying fundamentals over the last 5 years and see if they’ve moved in lock-step with shareholder returns.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Over half a decade, World Wrestling Entertainment managed to grow its earnings per share at 45% a year. This EPS growth is higher than the 20% average annual increase in the share price. So it seems the market isn’t so enthusiastic about the stock these days.

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

We’re pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. It’s always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. Before buying or selling a stock, we always recommend a close examination of historic growth trends, available here..

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for World Wrestling Entertainment the TSR over the last 5 years was 160%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

It’s nice to see that World Wrestling Entertainment shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 56% over the last year. Of course, that includes the dividend. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 21%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. It’s always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand World Wrestling Entertainment better, we need to consider many other factors. For instance, we’ve identified 1 warning sign for World Wrestling Entertainment that you should be aware of.
