ST. GEORGE — The Utah Tech women dominated the Division III La Verne Leopards and in the process broke the record for most points scored in a single game at Burns Arena Saturday afternoon.

Utah Tech 112, La Verne 61

The Blazer women put on a scoring show as they dropped in 112 points throughout the 40 minutes of play.

Utah Tech had a narrow 24-23 lead over La Verne after a very slow first quarter, with no one wanting to take control of the game.

The Trailblazers would start the second quarter with Maggie McCord hitting a three-pointer sparking a 9-0 run.

Utah Tech would score 14 unanswered points while holding La Verne scoreless for four minutes and ending the first half with a 52-37 lead.

Coming out of halftime cold, Utah Tech went scoreless for over two minutes. Emily Isaacson would break the silence with a three-pointer that triggered a 30-3 run leaving a huge gap of 35 points for La Verne to try to overcome with one quarter left.

The Trailblazers held the Leopards scoreless for seven minutes of the third.

Nothing much changed in the 4th quarter as the dominance continued as the Trailblazers claimed victory over the Leopards at the final buzzer by 51 points.

Utah Tech had six Trailblazers in double figures. Amber Kartchner led the team with a career-high 21 points. The redshirt freshman from Logan High went 8-10 from the field and went 3-5 from the free throw line. She played only 28 minutes to lead the scorers.

Isaacson had 17 points, with five made from behind the three-point line. The 5’11” forward dominated the boards, grabbing 37 boards so far for the season.

Seniors Maggie McCord and Breaunna Gillen both recorded double-doubles. McCord recorded 16 points and 15 rebounds, while Gillen put 16 points on the board with 11 assists. McCord recorded a season-high 15 rebounds in a single game, while Gillen recorded her third points-assists double-double for the season.

Coming off the bench, Taylia Stimpson recorded a career-high 14 points and went 75% from the distance as she nailed 6 of 8 from the 3-point arc.

Macie Warren also scored a double with 12 points.

The Blazer women finished the game shooting 46.8% from the field but dominated on the boards, grabbing 63 compared to La Verne’s 48. The game’s key was turnovers, as the Blazers forced the Leopards to turn over the ball 22 times, as Utah Tech had 16 steals.

LaVerne shot a poor 28.2% from the field, 18% from the three, and 73% from the free throw line.

The next opponent for the Trailblazers is Texas A&M Commerce at home in the Burns Center, with tip-off at 2 p.m. on Dec. 3.
