Gates
Maxwell Francis Gates, 84, of Altoona, passed away Thursday evening at his home. He was born in Altoona, son of the late William and June (Thomas) Gates. On July 15, 1960, he married Joan F. Bates in Altoona.
In addition to his wife of 62 years, Joan, he is survived by three children: Pamela Mock and husband, Joel of State College, Penni Diviney and husband, Anthony of Clearwater, Fla., and Kara Gates of Altoona; grandchildren: Brittani, Alli, Ashli, Austin, Anthony, Jacob and Connor; eight great-grandchildren, with two on the way; and a sister, Darlene in Florida.
Maxwell retired from Butterick as a lithographer. He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church, where he served as a past trustee.
He was a PIAA referee for many years for both high school football and basketball. He also coached Little League baseball and girls’ basketball.
Friends will be received from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21, 2022, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. with Pastor Tim Bartholomew officiating. Interment will be made at Grandview Cemetery.
